This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study will measure the effectiveness of a new treatment option in relieving symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea (IBS-D). The study will also analyze the product for its safety and tolerability implications.
Background
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is defined as a functional disorder of the gut, characterized by abdominal pain and distension, and some abnormality of bowel habit. IBS-D is a different type of the same disorder – commonly recognized by its painful symptoms. This disorder is known to affect nearly 11 percent of the global population, primarily those under the age of 50.
An official cause of IBS-D has not yet been determined, and no cure currently exists, however various treatment options are available.
Severe Impact on QOL: Painful Symptoms
The symptoms of IBS-D can be rather problematic, causing a significant strain on the lives of those it affects. It is therefore imperative to continue the development of effective treatment options that can provide relief from the following symptoms:
- Frequent stomach or abdominal pain/discomfort
- Loose, frequent, stools
- Abdominal bloating or cramping
- Irregular menstrual periods
- Frequent need to urinate
- Changes in bowel habits
- Loss of sexual desire
Study Specifics: Participation Requirements
The 1nHealth team is recruiting male/female participants, ages 18 to 65, living within a 25-mile radius of Chattanooga, TN. Potential participants must have received a diagnosis of IBS-D subtype based on Rome IV diagnostic criteria, three months before randomization. The study requires one or more visits to a physical site location for physical assessment, and participants will be asked to consume the study product over the course of four weeks. Compensation of up to $600 is available for those who complete the clinical trial while demonstrating protocol compliance.
